It certainly seems like such an old-fashioned item but nothing does a better job of separating the skin and the seeds from tomatoes or apples. A bunch of folks swear they make the best mashed potatoes. Others use it to make creamed soups. This one is nice because it is stainless steel and includes three different plates to accommodate a variety of tasks.
